Indian Banks in China Not to Accept Demonetised Currency Notes

Image
Beijing: Indians living in China cannot deposit the scrapped currency notes of Rs 500 and 1,000 at Indian bank branches here. The Indian embassy in an advisory said the demonetised bank notes "cannot be deposited at branches of Indian banks located in China or Hong Kong". One will have to authorise in writing enabling another person in India to deposit the notes into his or her bank account. "The person so authorised has to go to the bank branch with the specified bank notes, the authority letter given by you and a valid identity proof," the embassy said. Thousands of Indians live in China, mostly in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Of the seven India banks here, two are from the private sector. "I couldn't be more grateful," Isha Luthra, who works in Beijing, reacted sarcastically. "I am glad I have a trip back home before December 30," Luthra told IANS. December 30 is the last date to deposit or exchange the spiked currency. India o

Sunny Leone’s documentary that she has disowned, to be shown in India

Image
Like it or not, the Sunny Leone documentary Mostly Sunny directed by photographer-filmmaker Dilip Mehta will soon release in India. Sources say Sunny and her husband Daniel Weber did “everything within their power” to stop the film from being played in India. It isn’t very clear what the couple’s objection to the documentary is (they refuse to comment on the subject). Throughout its making Sunny and Daniel were, in Dilip’s words, “extremely co-operative” going as far as to volunteer information on her past and sharing rare pictures. Things began souring between the couple and Mehta when the film was to be premiered at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year. Sunny and Daniel wanted certain visuals pertaining to Ms Leone’s nudity in her past vocation (she was a star of adult-content cinema, and that’s politest way of putting it) as shown in the documentary, to be edited out. Dilip politely refused. Sunny and her husband retaliated by not attending the Toronto premiere of the docu

India announces measures to ease cash crunch for farmers

Image
India's government on Thursday allowed farmers to draw money from banks against loans sanctioned to them to buy seeds and fertilisers in the ongoing sowing season, as it responds to criticism against the move to cancel high-value rupee bills. Farmers will be able to withdraw up to 25,000 Indian rupees per week against their crop loans, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das told reporters, adding the time limit to pay crop insurance premiums has also been extended by 15 days. Millions of Indian farmers, however, have no bank accounts and depend on local moneylenders to fund sowing. (Reporting by Nidhi Verma and Neha Dasgupta; Editing by Sanjeev Miglani)

What's the best dress code for enjoying a meal? If a new London restaurant is to be believed, it's your birthday suit. It's the naked truth, apparently. The restaurant, called The Bunyadi, already has a waiting list of more than 11,000, British media reported. It will be open for just three months from June 2016 with a section where clothing is optional. It'll also offer a changing room for customers seeking to strip down. So how does the entire thing work? Is it just minute after minute of awkwardness? Here's how it works. According to Britain's Telegraph, "customers will be escorted to a changing room, asked to place their clothes in lockers and given a light gown. It is then up to them whether to remove the final item of clothing at the table. Tables will be partly obscured by bamboo screens and large napkins will presumably be provided to prevent unfortunate burns." That's not all. The serving staff will also be naked. Clearly, giving them
